Docosahexaenoic Acid is supplied as a solution in ethanol. To change the solvent, simply evaporate the ethanol under a gentle stream of nitrogen and immediately add the solvent of choice. Solvents such as DMSO and dimethyl formamide purged with an inert gas can be used. The solubility of DHA in these solvents is at least 100 mg/ml. DHA is sparingly soluble in aqueous buffers. For maximum solubility in aqueous buffers, the ethanolic solution of DHA should be diluted with the aqueous buffer of choice. DHA has a solubility of 1 mg/ml in a solution of 0.15 M Tris-HCl (pH 8.5). Store aqueous solutions of DHA on ice and use within 12 hours of preparation. Although the aqueous solutions of DHA may be stable for more than 12 hours, we strongly recommend using a fresh preparation each day.
